Local Government Campaign

We ask for your support in getting greater investment into local cycling facilities.

The CPF and the BFA on behalf of the Cycling Promotion Alliance are working on a campaign to encourage local government to invest some of their Roads to Recovery Funding (Commonwealth funding directly to local Government) on cycling infrastructure. In June 2006 all Local Councils have received a one off payment of an additional one year allocation of their Roads to Recovery Funding to invest into local roads.

We believe that investement in cycling and walking facilites makes sense and provides a great opportunity to increase mobility choices, support local business, manages congestion around schools, improves community health, improves community safety and restores a sense of community.

All Mayor's have received a letter letting them know their allocation and informing them that cycling infrastructure is elegible under the funding guidelines. The mailout included a fact sheet on the benefits of investing in cycling facilities.

We encourage individuals and cycling organisations to put pressure on Local Government to ensure that some of this funding is invested in cycling infrastructure. With many motorists looking for alternative ways to get around to reduce their petrol costs, there has never been a better time to make local roads more bicycle friendly.
