Lets have a rational debate

We share the deep sorrow with friends and family of James Gould who was tragically killed when hit by a cyclist in Beach Road. The incident highlights that driving, walking and cycling does involve risks and requires everyone to be alert and considered when using our road system.

Sadly it appears the incident has generated a debate which is based on emotions and not fact and figures. We all agree that motorists and bicycle riders need to adhere to the road rules. It appears that some people would like to make us believe that all cyclists break the road rules and motorists, because they are registered, adhere to the road rules.

AAMI just released this month a crash index which paints a terrible picture.

According to their study

  • most Australian drivers (88%) exceed the speed limit at least some of the the time
  • Four in 10 drivers (42%) admit to having driven when over the legal drink-drive limit
  • 29% of drivers admit they have momentarily fallen asleep at the wheel
  • 26% of Australians have been identified as being 'Reckless and agressive' drivers

41 Pedestrians and 9 cyclists have been killed this year on our roads, most of them killed by motorists.

Lets get a rational debate based on fact and figures.
