Cost Benefits of Walking and Cycling Schemes |
|
The UK Department for Transport has developed Guidance
on the Appraisal of Walking and Cycling Schemes which provides tools to
assess the monetary costs benefits of walking and cycling schemes. The
case studies in the report show benefit: cost ratios of 13:1, 22:1, and
11.7:1 far higher than almost all road or public transport investments.
Among the impacts that will be given monetary values are:
- The reduction in carbon dioxide from reduced car trips,
-
The number of deaths saves as a result of better physcial fitness,
-
A reduction in absenteeism and,
-
Journey ambience.
The guidance provides advice on how to estimate the demand for new walking and cycling facilities.
