Recreation Tips

Cycling for recreation is a great leisure activity for people of all fitness levels and ages

If you are new to cycling, riding on off road trails is a great way to build up your confidence, skills and fitness.

Some valuable tips

  • Check your bicycle before heading off
Don't put yourself at risk or inconvenience by riding a bicycle which is not in good working order. Check your brakes, chain and tyres before heading off and carry a pump and repair kit. Ask someone to show you how to change a tube, it is not very difficult and gives you peace of mind.
  • Plan your route
Unfortunately the signage on some shared trails is not as good as it should be, therefore it is a good idea to plan your trip before heading off and to take a map with you in case you get lost. If you cycle at an average speed you can cover around 8km in 30 minutes.
  • Start slowly
If you are new to riding, remember to start slowly and increase the distance and speed over time. If you are getting tired, stop and revive. Cycling should be an enjoyable activity.
  • Ride predictably
Make your intentions to stop, turn, overtake or slow down clear so that other road or path users can predict your movement
  • Keep hydrated
It is a good idea to always take a water bottle with you and remember to refill it along the way.
  • Be sun smart
Use sunscreen liberally especially on the neck, arms and face
  • Keep to the left when using off road paths
Keep to the left of the path and pass on the right when you can see ahead
  • Use your bell
It is often difficult for pedestrians to hear a bicycle approaching. Use your bell politely to warn pedestrians or other bicycle riders that you are approaching from behind
  • Use your gears
Cycling in high gear for a long time will stress your knee joints. Switch to lower gears whenever you can.
  • Fire safety
If you are planning to cycle during the high fire danger period, please take care and avoid riding on days of total fire ban, particularly in fire danger areas such as state and national parks.
