Accessories for Women

The right accessories will improve the quality, safety and enjoyment of your riding experience

 

When budgeting for a bicycle remember to allocate some money for accessories. Some accessories are required by law:

  • A bell or warning device
  • A rear red reflector
  • A white front and red rear light if you are riding in the dark
  • A bicycle helmet meeting Australian Standards

Some accessories are vital

  • A good quality lock is essential to prevent your bicycle from being stolen. A good range of locks are available from padlocks, combination locks, wire cables and U-locks.
  • A pump whch is compatible with your bike's tyre valve is vital to ensure that you want be stranded with a flat tyre
  • A repair kit and some small tools are a good idea to carry out small repairs
  • A water bottle and a  frame to fit it onto your bike helps you to stay hydrated when cycling

Accessories which improve your safety

  • Colourful clothes will make you more visable. There is a great range of cycling clothing available catering for different tastes and budgets
  • Mirrors are a good idea when cycling in traffic, enabling you to see what is happening in the back without having to turn your head
  • Good lights are essential if you riding early in the morning, at dusk or at night

Accessories which will increase your comfort

  • Knicks are padded cycling shorts which will increase your comfort if riding for longer distances. They come in many different styles and fabrics; look out for women's specific knicks.
  • A good saddle is vital to avoid pressure on the soft tissue. There are many models of women's specific saddles available in bike shops, try before you buy. 
  • Gloves will protect your hands from the wind and the sun as well as increase your comfort and protect your palms if you fall
  • Mudguards are vital in protecting your clothes if you are riding in the wet

Other accessories which are useful

  • Bicycle computers provide you with a tool to monitor the distance travelled as well as your speed and are popular for all kind of riding styles
  • Racks and panniers transform your bicycle in a convinient form of transport and enable you to carry goods and luggage
  • Cycling shoes and cleats that slot into the pedals are an accessory you may want to consider if you like high performance and/or competitive riding.
