Productivity Commission Inquiry Update
On
Tuesday the 5th of September, the BIA with the RCTA presented to the
Productivity Commission Inquiry into the Economic structure of the
Australian retail sector. The key elements of our presentation included;
- The Impact of the Low value Import Threshold
- Lost trade to Australian retailers
- Impact on jobs
- Impact on the Australian economy
- The cost of compliance to Australian standards and consumer protection laws
- Lack of information/data collection from the Australian government
Thank you to Nigel Letty (Bicycle Superstore) who also
presented on the day to provide a stronger retail perspective. The
final report and recommendations will be released in November.
Trade ShowsThe
2011 Ausbike Expo has come and gone, with most reflections of the show
identifying that there were good consumer numbers on the Saturday and
most of Sunday, with trade number on Monday being less than most had
hoped for.
Ausbike is Australia’s
only bicycle trade show and provides many benefits to this industry. I
would welcome any feedback or suggestions from wholesalers on how we
encourage greater attendance of retailers at the trade show.
Trade Show Drinks
Thank
you to Specialized for their support in sponsoring the trade drinks at
this year’s Ausbike expo. The function was well attended with almost
200 in attendance, highlighting the value and need for social
opportunities within the bicycle industry.
During the drinks, the BIA presented an overview of the
industry, highlighting the current activities of the BIA and the
importance of the industry organisation in supporting the entire sector.
Public Awareness Campaign
The
BIA, with support from members of the wholesale industry has committed
to deliver a public awareness campaign regarding the purchasing of
products requiring Australian Standards approval. The campaign will
utilise helmets to identify that if you purchase from outside of
Australia, the helmets will be;
- Illegal to use
- Void insurance and
- Cannot be used in any Cycling Australia bike race.
The
advertising campaign will feature single page magazine ads, online
banner ads and event signage. All advertising will direct consumers to
the website: www.bicyclesafe.com.au
Bicycle Import Data
July import figures have continued the alarming reduction in the
number of children’s bikes being imported into Australia. For the
reporting period of Jan to July, children’s imports are showing a 50%
reduction when compared to the same period in 2010.
Full details of the import data will be provided to all CPF and BIA members.
“The
BIA commissioned Quantium to provide data using its Market Blueprint
capability on the growth of online sales from three areas - Australian
‘bricks and mortar’ stores, Australian online stores and foreign online
stores.
Quantium is Australia’s leading independent customer
analytics and strategy business, working with many of the country’s most
respected businesses. Privately owned and headquartered in Sydney, the
group offers analytics services to the financial services and retail
industries across all aspects of the value chain. Quantium analyses data
on customer and transaction behaviour which can be used to assess
areas such as brand loyalty and customer lifetime value.
Market Blueprint® is Australia’s most comprehensive
competitive intelligence, market and customer information source. It is
a joint venture between a big four bank and Quantium incorporating the
actual purchase behaviour of over 2 million customers, as well as
their demographic profiles (geography, age, sex, income etc), weighted
by census data to give the most holistic view of customer shopping
behaviour, profiles and lifestyles available in Australia.
Market Blueprint® includes EFTPOS, credit and debit card
spend, Paypal, BPAY and direct debit transactions. This translates to
around one million transactions per day to provide insights into the
shopping habits of all Australians and their purchases in store, online
and even overseas.
The data and
insights Quantium is able to provide can lead to substantial benefits to
your business – there is no comparable data source in the market.
Should such insights be of interest to you or if you would like to
discuss any other opportunities for your business, please contact Julie

Government Relations Report
CPF Parliamentary Dinner
CPF
will be hosting a bi-partisan dinner at Parliament House in Canberra
on 21 September for MP’s and Senators with a concern in the areas of
transport and sustainable cities.
We
currently have 25 Federal members of parliament attending. This dinner
will provide the CPF with the opportunity highlight the benefits of
getting the community on bikes and the opportunities to achieve this.
Infrastructure Australia Workshop The CPF has been working with the Major Cities Unit of Infrastructure Australia to increase and promote support for active transport.
The framework released by Minister Albanese - Our Cities,
Our Future: a national urban policy for a productive sustainable and
liveable future, includes commitments to incorporate active travel into
the Department of Infrastructure and Transport portfolio; to monitor
and report on progress toward achieving the national cycling
participation target by 2016; to further consider effective active
transport action strategies; and to encourage the development of urban
areas that promote healthy lifestyles through cycling and walking.
Stemming from this paper, in August Stephen Hodge
assisted the MCU to deliver a workshop of key stakeholders to support
the identification of best practice in planning and evaluation of the
economic benefits of bicycle infrastructure.
The aims of the two days were to;
- Identify a broad strategic view of how we might increase participation in cycling and walking in our cities,
- Identify a national cost benefit analysis for the development of cycling infrastructure.
