Welcome to the June 2011 Industry Update from the Bicycle Industries Australia Ltd. (BIA) and Cycling Promotion Fund (CPF).

Productivity Commission Inquiry into Australian Retail

On behalf of the industry, the BIA submitted a response to the Productivity Commission Inquiry into the Economic Structure and Performance of the Australian Retail Industry.

At the time of this newsletter 93 responses had been published by the commission. There were several submissions made from members of the bicycle industry, these are listed below;

The BIA also supported a joint submission from Australian Retailers Association (ARA), Australian Sporting Goods Association (ASGA), Bicycle Industries Australia (BIA), Australian Toy Association (ATA), Photo Marketing Association (PMA), Australian Fishing Trade Association (AFTA), Australian Booksellers Association (ABA), Australian Music Association (AMA) and the Retail Cycle Traders Australian (RCTA).

Minimum Wage Rates

The Minimum Wage Panel of Fair Work Australia (FWA) has released its decision in relation to the Annual Minimum Wage Review for 2011.  FWA has determined that the Federal Minimum Wage, and the minimum wage rates in modern awards, will increase by 3.4% (minimum wage up $19 per week and a rise of $21 per week for Level 1 Shop Assistants).  

The increase will take effect from the first pay period on or after 1 July 2011.

Bicycle Import Data

March import figures have continued to see an alarming slowing in the numbers of children’ s bikes being imported into Australia. Comparisons to 2010 reflect a drop from 80,000 to just over 50,000. Adult bikes have continued to remain constant at just over 140,000 bikes till the end of April.

Cycling Promotion Fund News

The Australian Bicycle Achievement Awards

The Australian Bicycle Achievement Awards were held at Old Parliament House in Canberra on the 1st of June 2011. Along with celebrating achievement, the annual Awards provide an opportunity to advocate to key stakeholders parties on the benefits of cycling and Australia-wide contributions.

The key note speakers at the event were The Hon Greg Hunt MP, Wayne Wendt MP, Bernie Ripoll MP and Senator Scott Ludlam along with representation from key members of the Australian health, transport and environmental sectors.

Key Sponsors for the awards were the National Heart Foundation, Australian Cyclist and the Asia Pacific Cycle Congress.

Riding for Transport Survey

At the Australian Bicycling Achievement Awards, the Cycling Promotion Fund in conjunction with the National Heart Foundation launched the results of the Riding for Transport Survey.

The survey provided data on perceptions of cycling, interest levels in cycling and the barriers to the community riding for transport.

The release of this data provided positive media coverage including the front page of the Sydney and Brisbane MX newspapers with a combined readership of almost 200,000 readers. Live radio and TV interviews were carried in Sydney, Radio 2SM (Breakfast); Hobart Local ABC radio and Southern Cross TV; Perth, Radio 6PR Nighline and 98.5FM; Alice Springs, Local ABC radio.
