National Award to Recognise Bike Media
The Cycling Promotion Fund today announced two new national Awards including one for media as part of this year’s Australian Bicycling Achievement Awards. Recognising the critical role of the media in championing bicycling, the National Media Award will be decided based on stories and reports that have the biggest impact in disseminating key information and publicising the benefits of bicycling.

Spokesman for the Cycling Promotion Fund, Stephen Hodge, noted the importance of both print and electronic media in promoting healthy lifestyles which include physical activity such as bike riding.

“The media Award is enormously important to recognise the support and leadership from our best journalists in promoting cycling and getting more Australians to be active on two wheels.

“As well as the media, the National Awards continue to recognise the many professionals, ordinary Australians and organisations who are creating a healthier, more sustainable and bike-friendly nation,” he said.

Recognising the growing support for these awards, the National Heart Foundation of Australia has continued its relationship as the principal sponsor for this year’s awards.

Research released earlier this month by the Heart Foundation and the Cancer Council  highlighted that eighty-five per cent of secondary school students are not active enough to gain health benefits.

“The Heart Foundation aims to make being active every day easier for Australians by providing advice for families and working with all levels of government to work on creating local  opportunities for people to increase their levels of daily physical activity, said Dr Lyn Roberts – CEO – National, Heart Foundation.

“The evidence is clear that we have an urgent need to get our communities more active and participation in walking and cycling - especially for transport - will help reduce many of the health costs related to our inactive lifestyles. These Awards are important to recognise what works best to achieve this.”

The Awards ceremony will be held in Canberra with Award winners, Members of Parliament and stakeholders from around the country in attendance to celebrate the achievements. The date and venue will be announced later.
