Changes at the Cycling Promotion Fund

As some of you may know I have resigned as Program Director of the Cycling Promotion Fund after nine years. This decision has not been made lightly. I am committed to continuing to make a contribution towards creating sustainable, connected and liveable communities and I look forward to maintaining contact with the many wonderful and passionate people I have had the privilege to meet and work with. For anyone interested to read my reflection on working nine years in cycling sector,

Sadly Kathy Brunning who has worked for more than 6 years for the CPF in the office, is also leaving the organisation. I am sure many of you will miss her friendly greetings and her wonderful commitment to assist the many grassroots organisations or individuals wanting to make a difference. The end of year break up and goodbye gathering will be held on the 18th of December 2009 from 4pm to 6.30pm at the CPF offices in Melbourne.

The board of Bicycle Industries Australia has advertised for a new General Manager of the CPF and you will be informed of the new appointment in the new year.

Private Member’s Bill in support of cycling

On the 16th of November a private member’s bill in support of the benefits of getting more Australians cycling was moved in federal Parliament by Bernie Ripoll MP, Member for Oxley (ALP Queensland). The private members motion on cycling was supported by:

  • Darren Chester, Member for Gippsland (Nationals, Victoria)
  • Julie Owens, Member for Parramatta (ALP, New South Wales)
  • Luke Hartsuyker, Member for Cowper (Nationals, NSW)
  • Sid Sidebottom, Member for Braddon (ALP, Tasmania)
  • Russell Broadbent, Member for McMillan (Liberal, Victoria)

The Cycling Promotion Fund (CPF) and National Heart Foundation applaud the Member for Oxley, Bernie Ripoll and the Member for Parramatta, Julie Owens, who seconded the motion, for their stance on the benefits that increasing participation in cycling will bring.CPF spokesperson Stephen Hodge emphasised the strong bipartisan support for the motion.

“It is very encouraging that a total of six members of the federal Parliament chose to speak on the national, regional and local benefits of getting more people on bikes,” Mr Hodge said. The CPF issued media releases in support of the Members of Parliament and their strong support for cycling which is now on the public record of the Australian Parliament.

New CPF resource: Cycling Planning, Design, Policy, Program and Project Resources and Guidelines

The CPF has compiled a document with links to cycling planning, design, policy, programs and project resources and guidelines from around Australia. The document is a resource for local councils to assist in planning, designing, implementing and maintaining cycling and walking facilities and supporting programs and initiatives that encourage and promote the use of those facilities. The document is also a great reference resource for bicycle user groups, clubs and organisations wanting to work with local councils.

The CPF sent this resource to every local government and council in Australia that was successful gaining funding from the $40 million jobs fund, with a letter of congratulations. This is part of our national commitment to raise awareness of the benefits of cycling  for local communities and something we feel is playing a key role in supporting local governments around Australia in their efforts to develop more liveable and sustainable communities.

Jobs Funding

Updated list of funded projects. Since the last newsletter more successful projects from the $40 million jobs funding have been announced.  According to our records 172 projects at a value of $35 million have been announced so far. The CPF has been updating the list of projects by state.

Upcoming Cycling Events

With the holiday season just around the corner why not check out our listing of cycling events around Australia. It is terrific to see that the number and diversity of cycling events has been expanding, catering not just for the enthusiastic rider, but also for novices and people of all ages and fitness levels.  Please note, it is free to promote your events on the Cycling Promotion Fund website.

Members and Supporters

Without the generous support of our members and supporters the Cycling Promotion Fund would not exist.  We encourage you to check out our members and supporters and support those companies when purchasing products and services. These companies make a difference and put some of their profits back into supporting cycling.

If your favourite brand and product is not a member of the CPF, why not send them an email to encourage them to become a member and help to make a difference to cycling in Australia.
