Cycling Promotion Fund - Annual Report 2008/09

The Cycling Promotion Fund (CPF) is committed to promoting and encouraging cycling and advocating for policies and investments to make cycling accessible, safe and convenient.

We strongly believe that making our communities more cycle friendly can help Australians fight climate change, address the obesity epidemic, reduce congestion and make our cities more liveable and of course help many more people realise just how much fun riding a bike is!

Australians are speaking with their pedals. 2008 has seen the largest increase in people cycling with more than 337,000 more adults taking up cycling.

With 1.98 million adults choosing to ride a bike, it makes sense to provide incentives to boost this number even further and encourage people to cycle more regularly to gain the health benefits of regular physical activity.

Most cities in Australia have seen considerable increases in people riding to work and some of the popular cycling routes leading into the CBD are experiencing congestion. Leading local councils in Australia such as the City of Yarra are seeing cycling mode shares similar to those in Europe highlighting the significant potential to boost the number of people cycling for transport.

It is inspiring to see political leaders such as the Lord Mayor of Brisbane Campbell Newman and the Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore MP making strong financial commitments to create more cycle friendly environments and policies to overcome some of the barriers to cycling.

There is healthy competition emerging between some of our capital cities, all aiming to become the most cycling friendly city in Australia. To assist Australia to take advantage of the many opportunities increased cycling has to offer investment needs to increase at all levels of Government.
