CPF: Size and Scope of Workplace Bicycle User Groups in Australia (June 2009)

Australia is faced with a number of health challenges. The Federal Government is seeking input and policy advice on effective strategies to increase physical activity levels to improve community health and wellbeing.

Workplace bicycle user groups (WBUG) play an important role in inspiring and supporting people to take up and maintain regular physical activity through cycling.

The Cycling Promotion Fund has undertaking a survey of WBUGs in Australia to gain a greater understanding of

  • the size and scope of WBUGs
  • the range of activities undertaken by WBUGs
  • the level and extent of business/organisational support and incentives to encourage cycling to work
  • support which would assist WBUGs to maintain and expand their activities

This information together with other research will be used to provide policy advice to the Commonwealth Government to make a strong case for Government investment and support for effective workplace strategies to increase physical activity through cycling.
