Bicycles outsell cars in Australia - sales top 1.4 million in 2007

Australia is experiencing its biggest bicycle boom in the nation’s history, with figures released today showing a record 1.47 million bicycles sold in 2007 - outselling cars for the 8th consecutive year. 

Bicycle journeys to work jump 22% across Australia

Soaring petrol prices, concern about climate change and crippling traffic congestion have contributed to the increase in people choosing to cycle to work.

Cycling participation in Australia

Cycling has become the 4th most popular physical activity in Australia with more than 1.6 million adults cycling in 2006, an increase of 17% from 2001. 

Cost of physical inactivity in Australia

According to a study published by Medibank Private, the cost of inactive Australian adults is $1.5 billion a year. Almost 9 million Australian adults are not doing enough physical activity. People who regularly cycle save the Government millions of dollars in health care costs.
