A Message from the Cycling Promotion Fund (4 October 2007)

Mayoral support required for new federal funding to local government

The purpose of this email is to update you on the Australian cycling sector's proposal in the lead up to the federal election and request a short letter of support.  As you are aware, many councils lack the funding to provide appropriate walking and cycling infrastructure.

In the lead up to the federal election, the Australian cycling sector has developed an infrastructure proposal called the Healthy and Active Transport (HEAT) program.

The HEAT program proposes that the Federal Government establish a funding package of $50m per year, direct to local government, for walking and cycling projects.

Your support is needed

In order to advance this proposal, we urgently require a show of support from local government. Letters from council staff and Councillors will be very important in these weeks leading to the federal election. They can be very basic letters, simply stating that council supports greater funding for walking and cycling. Other points to consider for inclusion:

  • Council has plans for infrastructure projects within their strategy that remain unfunded
  • Details of a particular local project that might benefit
  • The importance of improved active transport amenity for your community
Please address letters to:
