Cycling has been rapidly increasing over recent years. It is now the fourth most popular physical activity in Australia, with over one million new bicycles sold in each of the last six years, outnumbering new cars sold for the seventh consecutive year.
The bicycles sales boom has been followed by a rapid increase in the rate of cycling in our cities. Melbourne has seen a 20% to 40% increase on its cycling routes leading into the CBD. Unfortunately the development of cycling facilities has not kept up with this rise in demand.
In the lead up to the federal election, the Australian cycling sector has developed a number of documents highlighting the benefits of getting more Australians on bikes.
Cycling > Moving Australia Forward
In August, Tony Abbott MP launched the Cycling Promotion Fund’s publication, Cycling > Moving Australia Forward in Parliament House. This document offers a snapshot of how cycling can help Australia overcome the emerging challenges of climate change, congestion, obesity and the pain at the pump.
The Australian Cycling Community Launches its Key Election Asks
Six time Tour de France competitor and Olympian, Stephen Hodge launched the Australian Cycling sector’s key election asks at Parliament House on 9th August 2007. Hodge said,
“We are calling on all political parties to support our proposal for federal funding for cycling. Promoting smarter transport choices and improved bicycle infrastructure will help Australia tackle some of its greatest challenges in the health, environment and economic sectors”.
Vote 4 Cycling
In the second half of 2007, the people of Australia will be asked to
elect a new Commonwealth Government. Historically, there has been
little federal support for cycling, relative to state and local
contributions.
With the converging issues of climate change, spiralling fuel costs,
an obesity epidemic and rising congestion, the 2007 federal election is
an important opportunity to get bicycles on the agenda.
