London increases its cycling budget

The Mayor for London is committed to tackle climate change by implementing a Climate Action Plan.

The plan recognises the important role walking and cycling can play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increases funding for cycling and walking close to fivefold - from 13 million pounds a year to 62 million pounds in 2008/9.

Together with an increase in funding for Travel Demand management strategies such as travel plans for school and lower speed limits, London is set to continue its shift from private car use to walking and cycling.

London is one of the few cities in the world which has seen a huge increase in cycling over recent years.

According to Transport London cycling has increased by a massive 72% on the major road network in 2005/06 compared to 2000.

Transport for London also offers some terrific cycling maps and a great online journey planner to make it easier for people to get around by bike.
