Having a bike which fits, is well maintained and the kids like, is the best start

When budgeting for a bicycle remember to allocate some money for accessories. Some accessories are required by law:

  • A bell or warning device
  • A rear red reflector
  • A white front and red rear light if you are rding in the dark
  • A bicycle helmet meeting Australian Standards

Some accessories are vital

  • A good quality lock is essential to prevent your kids bicycle from being stolen. A good range of locks are available from padlocks, combination locks, wire cables and U-locks.
  • A pump whch is compatible with the bike's tyre valve is vital to ensure that they want be stranded with a flat tyre
  • A repair kit and some small tools are a good idea to carry out small repairs. Remember to teach your children how to fix their bike themselves and they are more likely to look after it if they have to repair it themselves. It is advisable to check the bike with your kids regularly as they put a lot of pressure on their bikes and most likely it need more maintenance than your own bike
  • A water bottle and a  frame to fit it onto the bike helps them to stay hydrated when cycling

  • Cycling computers can be a great tool to enable your kids to monitor distances and maintain motivation, particularly if you go on a longer ride with them
  • There are lots of other accessories available, particularly for kids who ride for sport/competition. Let them do the research beforehand on websites and in cycling magazines on quality, price, and pros and cons of different models and brands.

Remember, a investment into a good quality bicycle and accessories are an investment into the health and wellbeing and safety of your child. Physical activity habits are established in childhood and by encouraging and enabling your children to cycle regularly you will give them a life enhancing and life-prolonging gift.
