We share the deep sorrow with friends and family of James Gould who was tragically killed when hit by a cyclist in Beach Road. The incident highlights that driving, walking and cycling does involve risks and requires everyone to be alert and considered when using our road system.
Sadly it appears the incident has generated a debate which is based on emotions and not fact and figures. We all agree that motorists and bicycle riders need to adhere to the road rules. It appears that some people would like to make us believe that all cyclists break the road rules and motorists, because they are registered, adhere to the road rules.

A City of Sydney cycling project to encourage people to ride to work
has won a category of the Heart Foundation Kellogg Local Government
Awards. The Cycling in the City project is an initiative to get people onto bicycles and to feel confident riding in Sydney.
More than 100 cyclists are participating in the program
that includes cyclist safety and maintenance training, free trip
computers, Bicycle
NSW membership, advice on cycle routes and a chance to network with
other cyclists. Organisations and companies participating need to
provide secure bicycle parking areas.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said "The Cycling in the City project is part of the City's 10-year Cycle
Strategy to increase bicycle usage by 500 per cent and construct an
integrated cycle network, providing bike paths within five minutes of
city residents."

Wherever cyclists go, Watson follows. Living a dream, Graham Watson took two of the things he loves--photography and cycling--and turned them into a career.
In fact, even as you read this, Watson's making the rounds at the Tour de France, recording images that capture both the fierce competitiveness of the event and the beauty that surrounds it. And as he shoots, he posts.
His gallery offers breathtaking shots taken on each stage of the tour, and Aperture helps him select the winners and get them posted before the next stage begins. "20 or 30 years ago," he reminisces, "nobody wanted pictures immediately--clients kind of expected to wait. That's all changed with digital." Aperture, of course, helps working pros like Watson break away from the pack. See for yourself.

We ask for your support in getting greater investment into local cycling facilities.
The CPF and the BFA on behalf of the Cycling Promotion Alliance are working on a campaign to encourage local government to invest some of their Roads to Recovery Funding (Commonwealth funding directly to local Government) on cycling infrastructure. In June 2006 all Local Councils have received a one off payment of an additional one year allocation of their Roads to Recovery Funding to invest into local roads.
We believe that investement in cycling and walking facilites makes sense and provides a great opportunity to increase mobility choices, support local business, manages congestion around schools, improves community health, improves community safety and restores a sense of community. |

A study of more than 40,000 vehicles has found that 4 wheel drive car drivers were almost four times more likely than car drivers to be using a mobile phone, and 26 per cent more likely not to wear a seatbelt. Lesley Walker, a research associate with Imperial College London's primary care and social medicine departement said "breaking one law was significantly associated with increased likelihood of breaking the other".
The findings also support the theory of risk compensation, which predicts that drivers of four wheel drive vehicles feel safer and therefore take more risks when driving. "Although 4WD vehicles are safer in a crash, their owners may be placing themselves and other road users at increased risk of injury," she said. "They take the risk because they are higher up, they feel they can see better … but the person in a car or the pedestrian on the road has a much worse outcome."
