Melbourne is in the middle of a cycling boom, as the AGE reports, with commuters taking to two wheels for their daily journey to work. High petrol prices have put cycling back on the agenda as a viable transport mode. Cycling counts by VicRoads indicate that at least 4,000 people are cycling in and out of the CBD each day. Taiwan is planning to construct 2,600km of bicycle lanes by 2011 to help promote the use of bicycles rather than motor vehicles. Premier Su Tseng-chang said: "the idea is to help save energy, protect the environment and promote the idea of riding bicycles". The Cabinet's plan is to build bicycle only lanes nationwide and also amend related traffic rules so that bicyclists' legal rights can be protected at the same time.
Well done to Taiwan, lets hope Australia is starting to follow the lead from around the world.

and reduce their driving by 10 per cent as money-saving contribution to

First Australian Cyclovia a great success
Congratulations to the City of Moreland, to the Trader's Association and all the partners who have been instrumental in making Australia's first Cyclovia a wonderful success.
Seeing the smiles on the faces of children who were permitted to ride bicycles on Sydney Road
was a wonderful experience. Sadly most of our neighbourhoods are today designed for cars and not children, bicycle riders or pedestrians. |

Brisbane City Council has set another benchmark in Australia in promoting and encouraging cycling. They have launched Brisbane's Bikeway Experience, an interactive CD ROM that showcases some of Brisbane’s most popular recreational bike rides, commuter routes and tips about riding. |

Most states have a cycling peak body, which represents the interest of bicycle riders at the local and state level. They are membership organisations which also provide a range of services for bicycle riders including insurance, cycling events and information and advice on cycling issues.
